Announcing a Nationwide Data Visualization Competition

The Census Bureau is launching a nationwide data visualization competition starting on May 18th, 2018. To kick off this competition, the Census Bureau is collaborating with Tableau Software and data.world to host a live event in Austin, Texas.

When: Friday, May 18, 2018 3:00pm to 7:00pm (*Pre-Event Workshop from 3:00pm to 4:15pm)
Saturday, May 19, 2018 9:00am to 5pm

Where: The Capital Factory 701 Brazos St, Austin, TX 78701

Rules: Entries will be accepted in the following categories:

• Economic Development
• Community Engagement
• Transportation/Infrastructure

Please note that a minimum of one open data set must be included in the final product to be considered in the competition. Preference will be given to those who leverage Census Bureau data in their final product. There will be Tableau staff on hand to offer support (download a free version of Tableau Public by visiting public.tableau.com).

Prizes: Winning teams will be featured in a data visualization showcase in early August and have their projects presented to the Director of the Census Bureau.

*Pre-Event Workshop, from 3:00pm to 4:15pm on May 18th, will demonstrate access to census data sets and geospatial files, and tips on utilization and implementation. The overall visualization competition will begin at 4:30pm.
