Cas Milner is co-Founder of EaM.ai, an advanced analytics software development firm and consultancy, focused on the financial and energy industries. He is a “quant”, having launched two hedge funds, managed several equity portfolios, and was Chief Data Officer of a San Francisco start-up (recently sold) matching investors to appropriate investments, using behavioral psychology and natural language processing. Because of his work in investments, he has a special affinity for fintech start-ups. His first career was in physics, and he earned his PhD in experimental particle physics at The University of Texas at Austin, where the title of his dissertation was hard to pronounce. He planned and built numerous experiments at the Superconducting Super Collider, Fermilab, Brookhaven Laboratory, and Los Alamos National Laboratory – a process with many features paralleling the creation of business start-ups. Cas’ role in most experiments was in designing custom data-collection electronics, and data analysis. His most recent contribution was devising a means to non-invasively measure the location of the melted fuel in the damaged Fukushima Daiichi reactors, using cosmic ray muons. He uses a very different part of his brain to paint, and is a long-time contributor to the artomat.org program, which sells art from over one hundred upcycled cigarette vending machines located around the US – several machines are located in Austin.
